Wandering WY: Aspen Alley

Updated: Nov 8, 2020

It's finally officially Spring! However, snow is still in the forecast here in Wyoming so I'm going to write about Fall just make sure we're as confused as the weather is. I meant to have this post up yesterday, but hey life has a funny way of editing your plans just when you thought you had it all under control. That's why I love these spontaneous weekend trips to new places in my state!

Armed with a map and a vague idea of what to expect from pictures on Instagram, my Mother and I set out on this day trip to Aspen Alley last fall.

Located in the northwestern tip of the Bow-Routt National Forests, Aspen Alley is a photo destination for locals and travel photographers from all over the world. This is where Wyoming gets to show its particular brand of Autumn smack dab in the middle of nowhere. You won't find it by accident, but you will be excited you took the backroads for this view!

Entering the Aspen Alley quite literally takes your breath away! For me, it immediately reminded me of my childhood love for Winnie the Pooh and the Hundred Acre Wood.

With a road like that extending from near-perfect rows of aspens, you get the sense that this magical forest goes on forever. We're not the only ones enchanted by this grove of aspens! Many couples have traveled through the grove carving their initials on the trees...

You can see some initials high above your head where lovers made their mark years ago and some that are being reclaimed by the tree being covered over by sap, and others stand out bright and clear as if they were put there just yesterday.

Take a deep breath, the view isn't the only magic in the Alley! You can smell the crisp days of autumn, the leaves decaying beneath your feet, and the wood smoke drifting on the breeze. Don't be too distracted by thoughts of pumpkin lattes and apple pies!

Sshhh... now it's time to listen! As always there is at least a breeze in Wyoming, shaking the trees. In the peace, in the middle of nowhere, you've just captured a perfect moment of fall. The leaves dancing around you, making their own music with the wind, and their seasonably trendy colors enlightening your view you can't shake the feeling that even though the earth is about to curl up for a long winter's sleep good things are coming...

What is your favorite season? Do you have seasons where you live? Where is your favorite spot to view autumn colors? Have you been to Aspen Alley?
